Spring Cleaning Tips

Ten ways to make your home healthier!

Sponsored By Oxi Fresh of The Woodlands

1.              Clear the air.
Take the smoke-free pledge. Choose not to smoke in your home and do not permit others to do so. Small children are especially vulnerable to the health effects of secondhand smoke. Choose to smoke outside, if you must smoke. Moving to another room or opening a window is not enough to protect your children.

2.              Air quality.
Listen to local forecasts for ozone, smog and particulate matter. When levels are high, limit your outdoor activities.

3.              Rid your house of radon.
Test the level of radon gas in your home with a radon test kit. If the test result is 4pCi/L or higher, takes steps to reduce radon.

4.              Some household products are toxic.
Use with caution! Look for alternatives to pesticides and household chemicals. If you must use them, always read the label and follow directions exactly. Always store them in high locked cabinets and in their original containers.

5.              Check for carbon monoxide.
Check that all potential sources of carbon monoxide, such as space heaters and wood stoves, are well-vented and in proper working order. Never idle the car or lawnmower in the garage, or use propane heaters in tents!

6.              Water, water everywhere.
Know the quality of your drinking water. If you have a private drinking water well, test it periodically.

7.              Get the lead out.
Avoid potential sources of lead. If your home was built before 1978, have your home tested for lead paint. When remodeling or doing home repairs, be careful that you do not create lead dust. Keep children visiting your home away from lead hazards.

8.              Keep mercury from rising.
Limit your intake of specific types of fish with high levels of mercury. Have a mercury-free home-find alternatives to mercury thermometers or mercury used for cultural or spiritual practices.

9.              Too much sun is not much fun.
Cover up, use SPF 15 or higher sun screen, and stay out of the midday sun to avoid damaging UV rays. Talk about the weather. Make a plan for temperature extremes-keep food, fluids and clothing stocked for extreme cold or heat, think of public places to go to escape the extreme temperatures, and identify who you can call for help if you need it.

10.          Wash your hands of it.

Keep the dirt outside. Remove shoes at the door. Wash your hands to keep dirt that might be contaminated with lead, and pesticides off you and your kids.

George P. Mitchell, former chairman of Mitchell Energy & Development Corp. and founder of The Woodlands, along with his wife Cynthia Woods Mitchell, for whom The Pavilion is named, dreamed of creating a first-class performing arts facility for The Woodlands since the community’s inception in 1974. They envisioned such a facility as a venue for performing arts events as well as popular music.

The dream became a reality when The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion opened with a star-studded gala weekend in April 1990. Since then, it has earned praise from both artists and audiences. The Pavilion presents approximately 75 events every March through November; events ranging in style from rock to classical, jazz to country, and modern opera to contemporary American ballet.

In 1992, thanks to a generous gift from Cynthia and George Mitchell to the Houston Symphony’s endowment fund, The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion became the official Summer Home of the Houston Symphony. As a result, The Pavilion presents a series of performances featuring the symphony every season.

Past performers at The Pavilion have included Houston’s own internationally acclaimed performing arts organizations - the Houston Symphony, Houston Ballet and Houston Grand Opera - as well as popular touring artists such as Frank Sinatra, Bette Midler, Van Halen, Tina Turner, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Britney Spears, Clint Black and Cher, among others.

"Sports, when approached in the right way, can be as valuable as academics in the development of a child"

Every child deserves be in the right environment that allows every child to form a solid foundation for the future.

Albert Einstein once said that "play is the highest form of research". We believe that children learn best when they are playing and having FUN. When children are having FUN they are more likely to enjoy what they are doing and will acquire skills without even knowing it!

Carpet is one of the most important features of your home. A clean carpet makes a room look fresh and tidy while a dirty carpet can make even the tidiest room feel dingy. Obviously, it’s important to keep your floors looking good, especially since carpet replacement is hardly cheap, but how can you do that?

Well, there’s an Oxi Fresh article out there with five great tips to help you out. I don’t want to spoil it for you, but here are quick versions of the tips:

1. Choose Wisely – The first step to having a good, lasting carpet is choosing a good, lasting carpets. Okay – that sounds very “hindsight is 20/20,” but it’s true. An example of this is choose dark colors for areas that are likely to see a lot of wear and spills – like a child’s playroom.

2. Avoid Traffic – You see traffic areas in many carpets, and a great way to keep them from forming is either putting area rugs over those areas. They’ll absorb a lot of the wear and protect the carpets below.

3. 00.35% of Your Day – Take five minutes – 00.35% of your day – everyday to vacuum your carpets, rotating between different rooms. This will keep your rugs looking fresh and will prevent debris from becoming embedded in the carpet fibers.

4. No Shoes – Shoes often have dirt or oils on their soles, so having people take them off should help prevent grime from being tracked over your carpets.

5. Regular, Professional Carpet Cleaning – Every six months or so, you should get a professional carpet cleaning to remove any embedded dirt and to get rid of any spots. It’s a good idea at this point to get a carpet protectant to help prevent spots from setting into carpets.

Oxi Fresh hopes these tips will help you out and you can read more about them in our article“Get Longer Use Out of Your Carpet With These Five Easy Tips.”

Clever Loop Review

By Ashley Musil

The name is very fitting for this clever little loop created to help nursing moms manage the logistics of breastfeeding. Priced at $11.99 on www.thecleverloop.com, The Clever Loop is a short piece of material with three magnets on the inside. It is placed on the inside of the collar with the top folded over the collar and magnetically secured to the middle of the loop. The “loop” is then created by pulling the bottom of the Clever Loop from under the shirt, effectively pulling up the bulk of the shirt and securing it magnetically to the two magnets which are already secured to the collar of the shirt. This loop holds up the nursing mother’s shirt so she can focus on positioning the baby without finagling with her shirt to keep it out of the baby’s way.

I tried The Clever Loop with my 14 month old for a few days. She is the third child I have breastfed and breastfeeding accessories have come a long way in that time. The Clever Loop is the first product I’ve seen that’s intended to manage mom’s bulky shirt, and it’s very effective! The instructions that came with the product are very clear about its use and include pictures with the loop displayed on a mannequin. It is very easy to use and the magnets are strong enough to hold a mom’s shirt up without a problem. The instructions also suggest to use The Clever Loop to “mark” which side you last breastfed. While this is a clever solution at home, I don’t see this as being practical at the grocery store if you’re concerned about people staring. If Mom desires to breastfeed discreetly in public, I personally suggest combining The Clever Loop with a great breastfeeding cover. The loop can hold Mom’s shirt back while she positions baby under the cover. Considering the combined amount of fabric between the shirt and the cover, this solution helps with the extreme bulkiness of using a cover. The only thing that could make this product better is a version that’s stylish enough that it looks like an intentional accessory and can be left on the shirt collar without arousing strangers’ suspicions.

Overall, I give The Clever Loop 4.5 out of 5 stars! The Clever Loop is one great product that is true to its claim of “helping moms keep up!”
